In 2022, India emerged as the fastest-growing major economy, showcasing consistent robust growth and resilience in its stock market over the past couple of decades. Despite currently holding the position of the 5th largest global economy, India is poised to ascend to the 3rd rank within the next five years.
For those residing in the United States who wish to capitalize on India's growth narrative by investing in the Indian stock market, this video offers insight into three different approaches.
Main Content:
Let's dive into the first method for investing in India from the US.
India-focused ETFs: You can directly purchase India-focused Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) through your US brokerage accounts like Robinhood and ETrade. These ETFs encompass a diversified portfolio of stocks listed on the Indian Stock Exchange. The NIFTY50 index, comprising the top 50 stocks by market capitalization, is among the most popular Indian indices. Holding these ETFs allows you to trade them on the US stock exchange while gaining exposure to the Indian stock market.
ADRs (American Depository Receipts): Alternatively, you can buy ADRs directly through your US brokerage accounts. ADRs are certificates issued by financial institutions representing a specific number of foreign stocks. Much like ETFs, you can trade ADRs throughout the day in your US brokerage account. However, both ETFs and ADRs offer a limited choice of funds and stocks for investment.
International Brokerage Account: An option that provides a broader range of investment choices is opening an international brokerage account within the US. This account allows you to purchase Indian stocks directly. Two prominent international brokers for buying foreign stocks are Interactive Brokers and Fidelity's International Trading Platform. If you already have a Fidelity brokerage account, you can enable the purchase of foreign shares in the same account, holding both domestic and Indian stocks. Nonetheless, using an international brokerage platform entails potential downsides, such as high commission fees and foreign exchange risk, where Indian stocks trade in rupees, but you hold them in dollars, exposing you to currency fluctuations.
The third option to invest in India from the US involves directly opening a bank account and brokerage account in India to buy stocks. This opportunity is available to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), individuals who have resided outside India for more than six months.
Here are the steps:
Open a PIS Account: Begin by setting up a Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) account, which comes in two types: NRE (Non-Resident External) and NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary). NRE accounts allow you to transfer money from your Indian account to your US account without limits, whereas NRO accounts have restrictions.
Approval by Reserve Bank of India: The PIS investment account needs approval from the Reserve Bank of India, and all transactions in NRI accounts are reported to ensure compliance.
Open a Brokerage and Demat Account: Finally, open a brokerage and demat (dematerialized) account, where you can begin investing in the Indian stock market. Many major banks and brokerage firms, such as Zerodha, ICICI, HDFC, offer a 3-in-1 account facility, consolidating these three accounts into one for convenience.
Three key considerations:
NRI accounts are subject to the same tax rates as local accounts, with a 10% tax on long-term capital gains and a 15% tax on short-term capital gains.
NRIs are not allowed to engage in intraday trading.
NRIs can trade in stocks and futures and options but are prohibited from trading in currency derivatives and commodities.
I hope this video brings you one step closer to understanding how to invest in Indian stocks from the US!
