Today we sit down with recent University of New Hampshire graduate Tom, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in Philosophy. Many high school students today are weighing the costs of going on to higher education as college tuition is at an all time high. Even though many people believe that President Biden will enact some sort of free college or tuition relief plan, you can't bank on that happening until pen has hit paper. That leaves many young people staring at the possibility of accruing six figures in student debt before the age of 21. This often dissuades people from studying things like philosophy in college, after all, in order to make a career with a philosophy degree, you'll likely need a PhD in philosophy...which means more debt. The conventional wisdom in 2021 is to pursue a STEM degree...that is science, technology, engineering or math related field. But where does that leave our culture if we are pushing people away from becoming great philosophical thinkers, artists or otherwise cultured people? Surely there must be more to the decision of going to college then how much money it will make you. Is capitalism turning every decision we make into an equation on how much profit we can extract from our pursuits?
