Various security on the streets STORYLINE: Eleven men suspected of being Pakistani-backed militants are said to have surrendered to the Indian army in Kashmir. According to Indian authorities, the men turned themselves over in Srinagar on Wednesday, when they also handed over their weapons, including a number of grenades. It isn't known where the suspected militants have been taken, although it's thought the Indian army will be keen to use the Kashmiris for intelligence purposes. The exchange of artillery and gunfire by Indian and Pakistani soldiers has now lessened in Kashmir, although Indian police said six suspected Islamic militants were killed in an attack on their hide-out in India's part of the disputed territory. Kashmir was hit by less shelling than in previous days on Wednesday amid tentative signs that tensions between India and Pakistan could be easing. Meanwhile, an umbrella group of more than two dozen political and religious groups in Kashmir accused Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government of using the problem of cross-border terrorism and infiltration as a ploy to divert attention from the Kashmiri people's aspiration for self-determination. At a news conference in Srinagar, the chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference told reporters that cross-border terrorism and infiltration was irrelevant as far as the Kashmiri people's right to freedom was concerned. India accuses Pakistan of arming and training Islamic militants who have been fighting for Kashmir's independence or merger with Pakistan since 1989. Pakistan denies the charge. Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf has said he wants talks with Vajpayee to try to resolve the standoff between the two nuclear-armed rivals, but Vajpayee has said India won't talk to Pakistan unless it stops cross-border incursions by the guerrillas.
