And that would make sense, until you get to the horn incident where Boromir refuses to go forth like a thief in the night. What would give Boromir that impression? And who would be asking Boromir to go forth that way if it wasn't his own idea to use stealth as a war strategy? So I replaced the immediately recognizable "Shield of Minas Tirith" with 'a shield' (nondescript) to establish Boromir's loss of personal identity and point of pride. Nobody would recognize him now as a future Steward of Gondor. Naturally Boromir would be angry about it and be so bold as to blow his horn to announce his own identity and departure to the world, like blowing a giant raspberry to all those who would try to strip his identity from him. Who is Boromir angry with? Not his host, Elrond, who isn't the hand of command that Boromir is obligated to bow to, but Aragorn, the rightful but as yet unrecognized King of Gondor. The clash of horns continues, and Aragorn has to figure out how to win the heart and loyalty of his own Sam. The Winter Solstice falls on December 22nd (or 21st), the shortest day of the year and the longest night, generally celebrated as Midwinter. After December 22nd, the nights will only continue get shorter and the days longer. The company had been advised by Elrond to only travel at night. Bilbo gives Frodo his armor and sword on the last day of their stay in Rivendell, December 25th. Bilbo has been reluctantly repentant (if I am spared, if I am let off), feeling pressured by some other higher authority who may not spare him or let him off the hook. Bilbo is three days late in releasing the armor and sword inheritance to Frodo, a belated Midwinter gift. But I would venture a fair guess that Aragorn's sword ceremony was held on Midwinter night. |
