| Video Discription | An indigenous activist from Spokane was shot in the chest Thursday at a protest in New Mexico, according to Rio Arriba Sheriff's Major, Lorenzo Aguilar. Aguilar confirmed to KXLY Friday that Jacob Johns was shot by 23-year-old Ryan Martinez, who got into an altercation with a group of people at the rally. At one point, he pulled a pistol from his waistband and fired one time, hitting Johns. Johns was taken to an area Presbyterian hospital, before being transferred to a hospital in Albuquerque. According to a GoFundMe being circulating by several Spokane groups Johns has been affiliated with, Johns has undergone at least one life-saving surgery, and remained in the hospital Friday. Aguilar said the rally was held in celebration of the Rio Arriba County of Commissioners' decision to postpone a plan to relocate a controversial statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate outside the County annex building. He said the commission decided to postpone it in the interest of public safety, saying dozens of protesters had been organizing daily since Monday. On Thursday, Maj. Aguilar said there were still about 30 people at the rally when the shooting happened. Maj. Aguilar said Martinez was facing charges including aggravated battery with a weapon and attempted murder. He said detectives were still working to confirm a motive. According to an article published Thursday in the Albuquerque Journal, Martinez was wearing a red "Make America Great Again (MAGA)" hat at the rally, and tried to rush an altar set up on the pedestal where the statue was to be put up. The Spokane Veterans For Peace (VFP) #035 and the Washington Voting Rights Restoration Coalition confirmed to KXLY that the man shot was Jacob Johns, who is both Hopi and Akimel O'odham (tribes native to the New Mexico and Arizona regions).
