| Video Discription | This is Pierrot from Debussy's "Quatre Chansons De Jeunesse" published in 1842. Pierrot is an 1800s commedia de l'arte character, popularized by french mime Jean Gaspard Deburau. Pierrot is synonymous with bafoon, or clown, or fool. He is often portrayed as having his heart broken by a woman who leaves him for the harlequin. In this piece, Pierrot has just left the wedding of his love and harlequin, lost in thought, as a woman in scant clothing bats her eyelashes at him. Watching him is the moon and Jean Gaspard Deburau, who give one another a knowing look. The piano is playful somewhat taunting, as it buoys and counters the melodic line. The piece ends on a melisma that is supposed to represent the exchange between the moon and the mime, who are watching the sad clown wander home. |
