The Town Watch are unique in England and forms Colchester's Civic Bodyguard to the Mayor of Colchester, to whom they swear an oath of allegiance each year. They also take it upon themselves, in the call of civic duty and pride, to taste the ale as often as is deemed necessary in the several ale-houses of the town. Each year they hold their Town Watch Feast, when honorable and not so honorable guests attend for their supper and sustenance - and a little mirthsome and bawdy entertainment to boot.
