About the Artists
Over a period of about 20 years I've had the pleasure of collaborating with pianist Miriam Arichea and performer/composer/arranger Jimmy Calire. As well as numerous arrangements, Jimmy wrote "Franco's Dream" for me, also premiered at the Ojai Art Center with organist/pianist Raelynn Clare. It honored Jimmy's immigrant Sicilian grandfather.
Calire's Gershwinesque "Jazzical Cello Sonata" was a Covid project for both Jimmy and the performers, giving us a new work to sink our teeth into during the fallow period before concerts resumed. It brought spirit and meaning while we wrestled to find musical purpose.
"Accomplished cellist Virginia Kron ... has done her best to keep alive the music of our time." says the Los Angeles Times. She was documented and interviewed by Ventura County’s Focus on the Masters.
Virginia received her Bachelor's degree in cello performance from the UW-Madison (Lowell Creitz), and her Master's, with a prize in performance, from USC (Gabor Rejto). After continued studies in England (William Pleeth) she returned to the US and joined Pacific Symphony Orchestra before settling in Ojai. She taught cello four years at Ventura College and presently teaches two classes at Cabrillo Middle School. She specializes in performances of chamber and new music.
Her concerto performances include the premier of John Biggs' Concerto for Cello and Chamber Orchestra with New West Symphony and a performance of it with the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra. She recorded it in Prague with the Czech National Symphony.
Virginia also premiered sonatas by Ojai composers John Biggs and Greg Haggard as well as Santa Barbara composer Leslie Hogan. She performed with jazz composer/pianist Roger Kellaway for Focus on the Masters. She has participated in many festivals including Aspen, Tanglewood, Ojai, San Luis Obispo, and Rome. Under the direction of Marin Alsop she was a tenured member of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz for 25 years.
For nearly 20 years popular pianist Miriam Arichea has performed brilliant concerti with Ventura's own Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra. Miriam has also appeared as soloist with Ventura College Symphony and San Luis Obispo Chamber Orchestra as well as in solo and collaborative performances at the Ojai Art Center and Ventura Music Festival.
Miriam has served as music director and pianist for the long-running Rubicon Theater Company, the Ventura Unified Festival of Talent, and Temple Beth Torah. She is a member of Singer Chamber Players. Miriam was the deservedly honored recipient of the 2014 Ventura Mayor’s Arts Award for Arts Educator.
As a student, Miriam studied with the renowned pianists and teachers Sofia Cosma, Halimah Brugger and Tibor Szasz as well as Loren Withers at Duke University. She continues valuable coaching with instructor Natasha Kislenko of UCSB.
A lawyer by training and profession, Miriam received her undergraduate and law degrees at Duke University. She presently handles criminal appeals as a court-appointed attorney with the California Appellate Project. Miriam loves coaching the Ventura High School mock trial program.
