However, Vitale ultimately turned against Massino and became a government informant, providing crucial testimony that helped secure Massino's conviction. His trial was a dramatic and highly publicized affair, with Massino ultimately being convicted and sentenced to life in prison. However, in a stunning turn of events, Massino himself would later become a government informant, providing information that helped to convict several high-ranking members of the Bonanno crime family and other organized crime groups. His decision to cooperate was considered a major betrayal by many in the criminal underworld, and it earned him the nickname "The Last Don" for being the last of the old-school mob bosses to become an informant.
