Ιδρύθηκαν το 1969 στο Χιούστον του Τέξας. Δημιούργησαν ένα χαρακτηριστικό είδος μουσικής, συνδυάζοντας τα μπλουζ του Τέξας, το μπλουζ ροκ, το μπούγκι και το χαρντ ροκ. Είχαν μεγάλη επιτυχία τη δεκαετία του 1980, όταν με τις συναυλίες τους γέμιζαν τεράστιες αίθουσες και αθλητικά στάδια. Τόσο η μουσική τους, όσο και η εμφάνισή τους ήταν χαρακτηριστική και πρωτότυπη. Ιστορία του συγκροτήματος Τα τρία μέλη του συγκροτήματος είχαν μακροχρόνια εμπειρία πριν συναντηθούν. Ο Μπίλυ Γκίμπονς πριν την ίδρυση του συγκροτήματος έπαιζε με τους Movin Sidewalks. Ο Φρανκ Μπίαρντ συμμετείχε στους The Cellar Dwellers, The Hustlers και The American Blues Bands, με τους οποίους έπαιζε και ο Ντάστυ Χιλ. Οι δύο πρώτοι δίσκοι των ZZ Top, με φανερή επιρροή από τα μπλουζ, δε σημείωσαν μεγάλη επιτυχία, αφού το κομμάτι Francine έφτασε στην 69η θέση των τσαρτ. Έγιναν όμως διάσημοι με το τρίτο άλμπουμ και ιδιαίτερα με το κομμάτι La Grange που με τα πολύ χαρακτηριστικά ακόρντα κιθάρας σημείωσε επιτυχία και καθιέρωσε το στυλ τους. Ακόμα μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία είχαν το 1979 με τον δίσκο τους Degüello και το 1983 με το Eliminator που πούλησε εκατομμύρια. Οι μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες τους ήταν τα Gimme All Your Lovin', Legs και Sharp Dressed Man. Σημαντική διάκριση ήταν η απονομή του Rock and Roll Hall of Fame το 2004 - Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand? Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand? Alright.
