Residents, reeling from shock and heartbreak, now confront the daunting challenge of rebuilding their homes and livelihoods from scratch. How does one begin anew when surrounded by total destruction? Join us as we look into the tremendous challenges being faced by the resilient residents of Sulphur as they continue the journey of recovery. The first thing you notice when you arrive isn’t what you see, but what you smell. As soon as you step out of your car, you’re hit by a strong, bad smell that covers the whole town. It's not just a town that looks destroyed; it smells like destruction too. Residents are slowly coming out from where they hid during the storm, their faces filled with confusion and sadness as they look around at their town, which now resembles a set from a disaster movie. Complete with fog and mist that make everything look even more surreal. Sulphur is tucked away in the Arbuckle Mountains and has a rich history tied to its natural surroundings, especially the famous mineral springs that have attracted people since before the town was officially established. It was originally set up because of these springs, and Sulphur was part of what was once called the Sulphur Springs Reservation. This area was taken from the Chickasaw Nation by the U.S. government in the early 1900s and was known as Platt National Park before becoming part of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. |
