JWT compact serialization means that you base64-url encode the individual parts and then join them together with a dot. The resulting string is then the JWT in its compact serialization. In case of a JSON Web signature token, you always end up with a string that contains two dots, separating the header, claim set and the Message Authentication Code (MAC) / digital signature. It is worth mentioning though that there are also JSON Web Signature Tokens without a Message Authentication Code (MAC) or a signature at the end. These tokens are called unsecured JWTs and in this case you do not have the Message Authentication Code (MAC) or signature at the end. In this case, the JWT ends after the second dot (but the dot is still there). The principle is exactly the same with JSON Web Encryption Compact serialization. All individual parts (in total five) are base64-url encoded and then joined together with a dot. The resulting string is then the JSON Web Encryption token in its compact serialization format. |
