| Video Discription | Scientists have made an exciting discovery in the search for life beyond Earth. According to the latest findings of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has discovered the presence of methane and carbon dioxide while observing exoplanet K2-18b, along with dimethyl sulphide (DMS). ANU Astrophysichist and Cosmologist Brad Tucker said the discovery was "exciting" as dimethyl sulphide is a substance only produced by living things. "Now it’s a very weak signal but dimethyl sulphide is a compound essentially methane, so carbon and hydrogens and sulfur," he told Sky News Australia. "On earth, we only really know this molecule to be produced by life forms, particularly things in the ocean plankton and it’s a byproduct they give off. "So this is kind of quite exciting." |
