The police report that dozens of residents from Kallakurichi and nearby areas consumed illicit liquor sold by local bootleggers, leading to severe symptoms like headaches, nausea, stomach pain, and eye irritation. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Kallakurichi Government Medical College, with additional medical teams dispatched from Villipuram, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai. Initial investigations indicate high concentrations of methanol in the illicit liquor. This tragedy has reignited concerns about the ongoing sale of illegal liquor in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister MK Stalin has confirmed the arrests of those involved and pledged strict action. He has also ordered a one-man commission, led by retired Madras High Court Judge B Gokuldas, to investigate the incident. DMK’s ally, Congress, assured that such incidents will not recur and plans to address the matter in the state assembly.
