Pakistani people watching from the top of a hill STORYLINE : The chief minister of India's Jammu-Kashmir state on Monday opened a "peace bridge" linking the Indian - and Pakistani - controlled parts of Kashmir, replacing a narrow footbridge that was severely damaged by a devastating earthquake last year. The new 220-metre (722 feet) long bridge was erected in place of a footbridge by Indian soldiers in order to aid the possibility of future trade links between the two parts of Kashmir, officials said. The bridge is crucial because it lies on the route of a recently resumed bus service connecting the two sides of Kashmir. The passengers are driven to the bridge, then have to walk across it to catch another bus to resume their journey on the other side. Azad said that would change when trucks and buses would be able to go across the new bridge once India and Pakistan decide to throw the route open for trade and transportation. The Himalayan province is divided between India and Pakistan but both countries claim Kashmir. The bus link between Muzaffarabad in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir and Srinagar was resumed on 15 December, when temporary repairs allowed shaky crossings across the bridge. The highway was opened to travellers in April 2005.
