He pledges that he would give his daughter a silk saree on her marriage. His pledge becomes the talk of the town as it was impossible for a weaver to afford an expensive saree like Kanchivaram in the pre independence era. Vegandam saves money for the purpose but his brother-in-law ruins his plans. Then to keep his promise Vegandam starts stealing silk strands from his work place.
