The real meaning of this name is Nar. means Narayan sitting in water. 3 There are many stories in the Hindu sacred texts that describe the divinity of this name. One such story describes Ajamila 4 Ajamila was an atheist and did not perform any duty towards his family 5 It is told in some texts that Ajamila was a pious person in his young age, who later indulged in immoral activities like gambling and drinking. 6 In his last hour he was left alone and used to cry out to his son Narayana. His son did not help him at all and Ajamila took his last breath. 7 After the death of Ajamila, the Yamdoots came to take his soul to Yamaloka 8 But he was stopped by the messengers of Vishnu because he had uttered the name of Narayana not for the glory of the Lord but out of affection for his son. 9 The messengers of Vishnu said that Ajamila had not performed his moral duties but had attained atonement by uttering those four words of the Supreme Lord. 10 By the mercy of Lord Narayana, Ajamila was later taken to Vaikuntha. In other texts it is said that he was given back to life and he renounced evil and worshiped Lord Vishnu. 11 Later on he did penance and surrendered himself to Lord Vishnu.
