| Video Discription | So, I've posted about movies that deal with Japan, Japanese culture or are set in Japan. Not Japanese movies, but Western movies. And not movies that are about WW2. As an American who was born in, raised in and have spent much of my adult life in Japan, such movies have always interested me. Some have been awesome, others have been horrifically disappointing. "Mr. Baseball", released in 1992, was one of the good ones. In fact, while it is filled with cliches (what movie isn't?!), it was actually a pretty good quick & dirty for someone unfamiliar with Japan and Japanese baseball. At this time in Japan. Meaning the late '80s/early '90s. The movie and its portrayal of of Japan and Japanese baseball at the time was pretty darn accurate. Of course, having Tom Selleck and Takakura as the leads in this sports drama was genius. Selleck loves baseball, so this role was a natural for him as an actor. Takakura Ken had already established himself as the go-to actor for Western studios at that time and his appearance and demeanor was perfect. The entire movie is filled with memorable scenes, but this clip is perfect. It captures the relationship between Selleck and Takakura, it captures the essence of Japanese baseball, and it captures the clash / merging of two cultures. A great movie that I always enjoy watching! And, yes, Tom gets the girl in the end..... it is Hollywood, after all!! |
