Chinatown MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the North East (NEL) and Downtown (DTL) lines in Outram, Singapore. It serves the ethnic enclave of Chinatown. Situated at the junction of Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road and Upper Cross Street, the station is near several landmarks, including the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Masjid Jamae (Chulia), Chinatown Point and People's Park Complex. Artwork & its creator The Phoenix's-Eye Domain by Tan Swie Hian This work captures the journey, nobilty and strength of Singapore’s Chinese forefathers. A richly-coloured phoenix mural adorns the concourse wall, while an accompanying poem written by the artist in three sets of rhyming couplets is presented in granite tiles. Born in Indonesia, Tan migrated to Singapore circa 1946. He grew up with a fluency in Chinese and Malay, and went on to study English and French at Nanyang University.[1] He began his career as a press attaché for the French Embassy in Singapore, after graduating with a degree in English literature from the university. While working as an attaché, he continued pursuing his passion for art. His first foray into the Singapore arts scene was with his first collection of poetry writings titled The Giant in 1968[1] and held his first art exhibition at the National Library on Stamford Road in 1973. |
