Kevorkian | 527 N.W.2d 714 (1994) Dr. Jack Kevorkian became famous in the 1990s for his support of physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. His insistence that the terminally ill should be able to choose how and when they died generated tremendous controversy and debate about end-of-life issues, some of which were explored in People versus Kevorkian. Sherry Miller and Marjorie Wantz were both terminally ill with conditions that caused great pain or were severely disabling. They each sought Kevorkian’s help in ending their lives. They met Kevorkian at a cabin where he had set up his suicide machine. This machine tied a string to the patients’ fingers that allowed the patients to give themselves an IV barbiturate by raising a hand. After the patients fell asleep, the patients’ hands would drop and cause the IV to release potassium chloride into their veins, stopping their hearts. Kevorkian attached the suicide machine to Wantz, who successfully activated it, killing herself. Kevorkian was unable to get an IV into Miller’s arm. He left the cabin and returned with a cylinder of carbon monoxide and a mask. He showed Miller how to operate the gas and put the mask on her face. Miller used a screwdriver to open the gas valve and died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Kevorkian was indicted on two counts of murder. The trial court dismissed these charges on the grounds that suicide wasn’t a crime, so no one could be criminally liable for assisting a suicide. The court of appeals reversed.
