EDIT: The title of this video will be "Don't Google Lovecraft's Cat", which is a racist troll meme. But writing the title on the video before the premiere, where people could see what the video was about, unfortunately just perpetrated the meme.
So for the sake of clarity: Lovecraft's cat is something trolls post to get you to google the name. It's not a very interesting name, nor a secret, it's just incredibly racist and stupid. Read about the meme here, content warning for racist-slurs here: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/hp-lovecrafts-cat
ORIGINAL TEXT:
The name of Lovecraft's cat is publicly available and featured in his stories. It's simply a very racist name. And internet-troll use it to get people who are unaware to google it. If you want to see the censored version of the name, jump to the very end of the video. It's not very interesting, just stupid and racist.
But this is a good opportunity to discuss Howard Phillips Lovecraft, his work, and all the problematic sides of his life and the misinformation surrounding it.
Lovecraft is my favorite author, and has inspired me in so many ways. But it's not just because Cthulhu is cool, and Metallica's Call of Ktulu rocks, and I liked shooting Shub-Niggurath in Quake. The pop-culture impact of Lovecraft is undeniable, from everything the name of the band Living Colour to South Park episodes and movies like Alien and games like Bloodborne, in addition to the tabletop RPG classic Call of Cthulhu.
But I believe his importance as an author extends way beyond just the horror genre, and that he somehow, in his fear of modernity, wrote something that can speak deeply to us even in our post-post-modern age. And that is, unfortunately, also linked to his extreme prejudice and racism.
The script of the episode is done mostly from memory, without much research specifically for the video, but in general my ideas about Lovecraft lean heavily on these three books:
ST Joshi: I Am Providence, the life and times of HP Lovecraft. The best and most comprehensive biograhpy about Lovecraft. https://store.hplhs.org/collections/books/products/i-am-providence
Graham Harman: Weird Realism, Lovecraft and Philosophy. A great take on Lovecraft's approach to the unknown and unknowable, and the best analysis of how he used impossible language in his later works. https://www.collectiveinkbooks.com/zer0-books/our-books/weird-realism-lovecraft-and-philosophy
Maurice Levy: Lovecraft, a Study in the Fantastic. Incredible analysis of Lovecrafts themes, but being published in the 70's, before much biographical information was available, it is outdated on some points. https://www.wsupress.wayne.edu/books/detail/lovecraft
This video is just a short introduction to the topic, but if you want a longer argument please comment, subscribe, and support. The art in this episode will be made available for free use.

THE TOOLS I USE:
All these tools are things I use myself. That being said, there’s so many great brands, big and small, that produce amazing alternatives, and you can also get them from other stores than Amazon. However, if you use the affiliate links below, I get a small cut.
All of the sets recommended below will include color or brush variations that might be superfluous. I tend to buy both sets and individual items, because I like the flexibility. But on a budget, just get the one item you need.

BOOKS & INSPIRATION:
I’ve learned to draw from a lot of books, most of them on drawing and penciling comics. But the two most important for my own artistic journey were probably:
How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way: https://amzn.to/3IghYtS
Bridgman’s Complete guide To Drawing From Life: https://amzn.to/3IeUd5f
(I’m not satisfied with the print, but great book still)
None of them have to do with inking directly with a brush, but they lay the groundwork for most of what I do. |
