- Oryza Sativa, commonly known as rice, is associated with wet, humid climates. It likely originated in the far Eastern Himalayas or southern India and later spread to China, Korea, the Philippines, and eventually Japan and Indonesia.
- India is a significant centre for rice cultivation. It’s believed that indica rice was first domesticated in northeastern India and spread to Southeast Asia and China. On the other hand, the japonica variety came from southern China and was introduced to India. Wild rice still grows in Assam and Nepal.
- Domesticated rice appeared around 1400 BC in southern India before spreading to fertile river plains. Some suggest that the word “rice” is derived from the Tamil word “arisi.”
- Rice is grown across India, from sea level to 3000 meters in altitude. It thrives in a hot and humid climate with plenty of sunlight and water. The temperature should stay between 21°C and 37°C, with a maximum tolerance of 40°C to 42°C.
- In South India, major rice-producing states include Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Rice is predominantly cultivated in the delta regions of the Godavari, Krishna, and Cauvery rivers.
- In the Eastern region, rice is grown in the states of West Bengal, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar.
- Wheat is adaptable, preferring cool, moist conditions for growth and warm, dry weather for ripening. Ideal germination is at 20-25°C, but it can tolerate 3.5-35°C. It doesn’t thrive in warm, humid climates. In India, it’s primarily a winter (rabi) crop.
- Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab, Haryana are the 3 largest wheat-producing states in India.
