| Video Discription | In-game music from 2001 PC game Knights of the Cross (AKA Krzyżacy). Based upon the historical novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz by the same name (both of them), which itself is based upon real historical event: the Teutonic - Polish-Lithuanian crusade of 1409-1410 and its peak: the Battle of Tannenberg / Grunwald, where the Teutonic Order received a very humiliating defeat, resulting in the death of the grandmaster, Ulrich von Juningen. Fortunately for the Order, Polish king Wladyslaw II. Jagiello was slow to take initiative after the victorious battle and gave the Order time to prepare for the siege of its capital, Marienburg. After months of siege, the king was forced to lift it due to significant losses his troops were suffering from typical diseases of the period, associated with army and siege (mostly dissentry). The game itself lets you play as either a knight of the Teutonic Order, and over the course of several missions you can get to the grat battle where you can attempt to change history. Or you can play as a Polish knight, and ensure history stays on its course. Combat system of the game featured some, at the time not widely used features, such as cavalry gaining charge bonus if it moves certain distance on the way to target, or wind direction and its strength affecting ranged attack of archers and crossbowmen. The game did not become widely known though, because its graphics was mostly outdated. It retains a very small cult of followers, who from time to time like to play a scenario or two or have a multiplayer match. Apart from the aforementioned features, it only shined thanks to the wonderful soundtrack. While sound effects were really bad, the music itself was great. There are really only two songs. One for menu, which fits the castle/monastery interior style of the menu and this piece, which IMO is really fitting onto a battleground of the period. Composed by Adam Mroczek. Pictures / paintings depicting various scenes from the Northern crusades of the period, including the Battle of Grunwald and the siege of Marienburg. Teutonic and polish banners and coat of arms, as well as portraits of the commanders, grandmaster Ulrich von Juningen and king Wladyslaw II. Jagiello are included. |
