| Video Discription | A spell of hot weather led to a shortage of water in "The Laggan Desert" 30 years ago this week. Many of the wells and springs in this region of Donegal dried up. Gabriel Gilchrist is a farmer from the area known as The Laggan Desert and he has to haul water from a spring. His cattle drink 2,200 gallons of water a day. For a twelve mile radius, there’s no piped water supply. The hot weather spell has made it particularly difficult for the three thousand people that live in the area. Water from the reduced supply is not fit to drink. John Hegarty has to travel seven miles to Newtowncunningham to get drinking water. The water in Newtowncunningham comes from Northern Ireland while the water at the other end of the Laggan Desert comes from a Donegal lake. Donegal County Council has drawn up plans to pipe water into the area from both the Donegal lake and from Northern Ireland. Councillor Danny Harkin is critical of the fact that the plans were made a year ago and nothing has been done. He believes that a council delegation will have to go to the Minister for the Environment to find out why there has been such a delay. In the meantime, Danny Harkin says that water tankers should be sent into the Laggan Desert to provide water directly to the residents who have been left high and dry.
