I came up with the main riff for this song in 2014 sitting on the sofa at home during my gap year watching the Winter Olympics (making the most of my time as usual). I noodled around with the riff for hours sculpting the melody just enjoying the ergonomics of how it felt to play, but, as usual, no lyrics came to mind. Then I left home … To my surprise one of the things I missed most was the last thing I expected … my little brother. He’d always just sort of been there and so I’d never really experienced life without him and so not having him there everyday really felt quite strange. I started thinking about all the things that we used to do as kids; skimming stones, playing on the beach, getting REALLY muddy and building treehouses and dens in the garden and around the house … queue the line ‘I’ll take your sticks and your stones and build a house in a tree’ and I was away! The more I wrote the more I started to think what being and having a brother was really about and the more I realised it was just about being there no matter what. Come rain or shine, good times or bad, pinging spongy grips into each other’s eyes (thanks for that one) or perforating beach others eardrums with lollipop sticks (ok we’re even) I would always be there for my little brother. And so if you’ve got a little brother, or you are a little brother, or even if you’ve got someone in your life who feels like the brother you never had, I think you’ll really enjoy this track!
