| Video Discription | (16 Jul 2015) LEAD IN: Traditional Libyan clothing is seeing a surge in popularity in the lead up to Eid al-Fitr. The markets are full of shoppers despite conflict in the country pushing up prices. STORY-LINE: Shoppers wind their way through the halls of the Al-Moshier Market searching for traditional Libyan clothing in Tripoli's old city. Many of the men here will spend the festive season wearing styles from times past. It's a source of national pride and shopkeepers have noticed that this year, even young men are turning away from foreign designed and made clothes. "This year is unnatural (high sales), the sales of traditional clothes, from trousers to vests and dresses, also the traditional cape, our traditional clothing in general. Now the young men even buy the short dresses, before they used to only buy the long dress," shop owner Osama Khalid says. Abdul Razak Mohammed is proud to wear the traditional styles. "For me it's better to go and buy our national dress, it's better; the traditional dress is better than foreign dress as proud Libyans, and it's much better (in quality) and more comfortable." Traditional Libyan clothing includes long and loose gowns worn with trousers. Sometimes a cloak is worn with a flat, brimless cap. Decorative vests adorn most shops here and a young boy tries on a bright white gown. Shopper, Osama Khalid, thinks all young people should be embracing clothes like this. "My advice to all the youth during Eid al-Fitr, we should have an identity in the way we dress, the way we speak, in everything. We should have an identity, so we don't wear anything other than Libyan dress, we should preserve this dress." But with a civil war destabilising the country, prices for these clothes are going up. Shop owner, Ali Mustafa Al-Darhube explains that he's had to pass on price rises from his suppliers. "We, as the dealers, we buy an item for 140 Dinar (101.40 US dollars) and sell it for 160 Dinar (115.90 US dollars), and when we go to the wholesalers again they tell us that the price went up, because the dollar exchange rate has risen and other issues, so we buy it for 160 Dinars (115.90 US dollars) and sell it for 180 Dinars (130.40 US dollars)," Al-Darhube says. "Again we go to buy from them they tell you the price went up again. So we find ourselves increasing the prices, and the prices are now way over the top, but to be honest it's not because of the dealers, it's because of the government. The government should provide some easing solutions." Libya is torn between rival governments and militias four years after a civil war toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
