Kim Da-mi helps us look beyond the digits. More than a third of single-person households in Korea make under 2-thousand U.S. dollars every month. Statistics Korea on Friday said that almost 40 percent of single-person households in South Korea have a monthly income of under 2-thousand dollars. This is significantly lower than the average for single-person households in the United States whose monthly income is around 3-thousand US dollars on average. Life satisfaction of those living alone in Korea is also lower compared to households with multiple family members. Single-person households were relatively unhappy with their financial status, homes and leisure time. Single-person households make up just under 30 percent of all households in Korea. That's the 7th highest proportion of single-person households in the world, and is rapidly gaining on other countries like Denmark and Japan. That also becomes a problem with Korea's aging population where almost half of Korea's entire population is expected to be made up of people over 65. That means in 50 years, one working person will have to support one elderly person. That would make Korea's old-age dependency ratio the highest in the world. As of 2016, six working people support one elderly person in Korea. In such a fast aging society, Statistics Korea points out an emerging trend where elderly people take care of elderly people. In fact, almost 60 percent of those aged over 70 took care of their family members aged over 50 in 2016.
