The IPO lockup period is a waiting period determined by the IPO underwriters where company insiders are not allowed to sell their shares. There is usually a lot of selling pressure in anticipation of the lockup period expiration that often leads to a decline in share price so make sure to buy the dip. Some of the best buying opportunities for newly IPO stocks are in the days and weeks leading up to the lockup expiration as well as the lockup expiration day itself. Make sure you are aware of the possibility of multiple lockup periods for a single IPO company. Buying put options in the weeks or month leading up to the end of the lockup period is another strategy that investors use to capitalize on the fall in share price of IPO stocks around the lockup expiration, but just make sure to watch the premiums on those put options because they can get expensive.
