And so they stayed back integrating into the local community, adopting culinary practices along the way. And thus was born Karnataka style Maratha fare, distinctly different from that found in the neighbouring state. I revisit Marata Darshan, a family-run eatery that though immensely popular today had rather humble beginnings on a pushcart nearly 30 years ago. Hope you enjoy this episode, take care and stay safe. Rs. 200 (usd 2.6) 9/10 Chilli Chicken The Maratha version, rich in tomatoes, green chilli and pepper; the chicken is moist and juicy, cooked perfectly down to the bone. Rs. 150 (usd 2) 9/10 Mutton Liver Fry The liver has bite but is still creamy, any gaminess is offset by the flavours of the pepper that the liver is roasted in. It makes for a delicious meal with the thin chapatis served here. Rs. 200 (usd 2.6) 8.5/10 Mutton Korma Meat that is swathed in a generous amount of fat, the meat is cooked long until soft and tender. Barring the initial bite, it breaks down in the mouth instantly. The rice and korma are the perfect match, the rice doing well to absorb the deep unctuous flavours of the curry. Rs. 200 (usd 2.6) 10/10 Chicken Biryani A local Karnataka style biryani, the rice is moist and redolent with the flavour of mint and coriander, the meat peels away from the bone and exudes a smokey aroma. It’s the sort of biryani that works well when you taste the rice and meat together, add some if you need a spicier punch.
