| Video Discription | Matera is a city located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. The Sassi area of Matera is a complex of cave dwellings carved into the mountainside. In the year 1952 the evacuation of the cave dwellings began due to the poor living conditions. The dwellings were declared uninhabitable and people were moved to the new built up area of the town. The first signs of human occupation in this area date back to the Palaeolithic (10th millenium BC) age as confirmed by the archaeological remains found in the Grotta dei Pipistrelli and of the human skeleton dating back to over 250,000 years ago uncovered in Altamura less than 20 km away from Matera.
