| Video Discription | The Milky Way is surrounded by a population of gaseous high-velocity clouds (HVCs). HVCs are an integral part of the Galactic baryon cycle, and trace inflow, outflow, and fountain circulation. While the larger HVCs mostly lie within 10-15 kpc of the Galactic plane and are well understood, the Compact HVCs (with angular sizes of less than a few degrees on the sky) lie at an unknown distance, and their origin is unclear. Chemical abundance measurements can provide crucial clues about their origins. I will discuss recent measurements of the chemical abundances in five Compact HVCs using the Green Bank Telescope and the COS UV spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that several of the clouds have very low metallicities (2-4% solar), which argues against a Galactic origin and suggests the clouds are located somewhere in the outer Galactic halo or Local Group |
