7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Cecilie Hollberg, Director of Galleria dell’Accademia:
“I was surprised, astonished, I couldn’t believe it because it is absolutely impossible to do something like that. So I hope and I still hope that this was fake news. But there was an art historian, the art historian in the 16th century, Vasari, Giorgio Vasari, and he said, 'Who saw the David doesn’t have to see other sculptures anymore'. So this is so strange that the icon of the Renaissance could be called pornographic. You have to distinguish between nudity and pornography and this is absolutely not the same. And this means that there is a lot of ignorance really in the meaning of the word, not knowing the bible, not knowing the history, not knowing the art history and the entire Western culture.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Marla Stone, Professor of Humanities, American Academy in Rome:
"It is very confusing why this famous image of art at the height of the Renaissance would be considered upsetting, or even as apparently, as one of the parents in Florida said, pornographic. But from their perspective, from a United States, it is in the middle of a culture war in which forms of sexuality, the body, gender expression, are sort of under siege, under fire. The image of the David and the naked body of the David was considered offensive by these parents in Florida."

“I am excited to see it, I think it is art, I think it is history, it is one of the most incredible parts of our history. I think that Floridians are crazy, especially the one that heads the state, and I feel incredibly sorry for the children that don’t get to see it from the principal’s point of view. I think it is just sad and I am glad I don't live there.”

“So I actually just saw the article about this, and I just, it is part of history, I don’t know how you can say that it is porn, like pornographic.”

STORYLINE:
Tourists lined up to see Michelangelo’s statue of David in Florence on Tuesday and some expressed their shock at the recent controversy over the Renaissance masterpiece at a Florida school.
The reaction came after the board of Tallahassee Classical School forced principal Hope Carrasquilla to resign last week.
He has declined to elaborate.
