Soldiers walking STORYLINE Six members of the Islamic militant group Hezb-ul Mujahedeen were killed in an encounter with security forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Wednesday. Police said a top commander of the group, Shoukat Ahmed alias Janbaz, was among those killed. The Press Trust of India reported that the encounter broke out in the early hours on Wednesday in the Budgam district of central Kashmir. Local police and paramilitary troops cordoned off the area and raided the village of Gulabdaji following information about the presence of top militants in the area. The militants, who were hiding in a house, opened fire on the security forces and in the ensuing gun battle six militants were killed. Hezb-ul Mujahedeen is the largest Kashmiri rebel group. About a dozen Islamic militant groups have been fighting for independence or merger with neighbouring Pakistan since 1989. More than 65,000 people have been killed in the violence. Gulabdaji is the summer capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state, 45 kilometres (30 miles) from Srinagar.
