| Video Discription | In 1933, a referendum was held in Western Australia. Amazingly, a sizable majority -- 68 per cent -- decided in favour of breaking away from the federal government. Yet despite the sentiment in favour of seceding, WA's plea was denied by the Australian government and the British Parliament in no uncertain terms. The powers that be were not about to stand for such intransigence. For the most part, Western Australians appear to have resigned themselves to their fate. But worsening economic conditions have in recent years re-ignited the debate over secession.
