Residents have been forced to abandon their homes or live in unsanitary conditions, with many complaining about government inaction to help. STORY-LINE: Karachi is underwater. The heavy rains of the monsoon season have flooded the southern port city, with devastating results for those in low-lying areas. Khairnissa Begum's home has been overwhelmed by rain water mixed with sewage, which has leaked from the outdated drainage systems. All she can do is try to remove it, bucket by bucket. But it feels like a losing battle. "Since last Friday prayer there is downpour that has ruined and damaged all our household items, while we have been deprived of drinking water and electricity from last Friday onward," she says. "We are so annoyed, my husband is paralyzed and can not walk, the rain has ruined all of us, we are in a state of utter helplessness." The stress is too much for her. Begum and her disabled husband have sought sanctuary on their rooftop. They are living among the few possessions they have been able to salvage. Their situation is not unusual. Much of the city's streets are waist-deep with water. And of course, stagnant water laced with sewage presents a health risk. Many families have been forced to flee their own and head for safer areas. Like other residents, Abida Solangi is relying on family to help her through the floods. "I am shifting my household items to my daughter's house so that we can save our other appliances," she says. Although rains have lashed many parts of Pakistan, Karachi, located near the Arabian sea, has been the hardest-hit city. The authorities say Karachi has received record breaking rains since last Friday. Even main roads are blocked and residents say not enough is being done to make them usable again. "Now they know there will be heavy rain during monsoon season, but they have not taken any action so far. We request that the government must focus on main thoroughfares and start maintenance work as soon as possible," says student Arshia Ahmed. More than 90 people have died from flooding across Pakistan since Sunday, the country's national disaster management agency said Thursday. The monsoon season runs from July through September.
