This started out as a lockdown project to create a hybrid version of the two cuts using Adobe Premier Pro but I thought it might be nice to give Janice Rand a cameo in the second half of the movie. Part 6 https://youtu.be/FwEBSa8OIz0?si=jQpzpkUJyU4YSUHY
When I eventually decided to have a go at re-incorporating the available parts of the Airlock scene and Memory Wall sequence, it became apparent that they would be dull without some dialogue. Inspired by the landing party of Dallas, Cain, and Lambert from Alien, I decided to place Rand inside Spock's original spacesuit to see what I could do. Using a mixture of Realallusion Character Creator and Iclone, Wav2Lip, Deepfake, Spleeter, Deepvoice, Gimp, Adobe After Effects, and snippets of dialogue from Star Trek episodes, movies, and other shows (such as the Outer Limits, the Rifleman, Death Valley Tales, and the Wonderful World of Disney), I have tried to stitch together a coherent narrative using what little footage was available. I hope you enjoy!
This entry used rotoscoping, vocoding for Rand, and attempts at pasting Rand inside Spock's spacesuit. Rand's close ups use a CGI avatar with a layer of Deepfake. I hope she passes a close up inspection. Changing the colour of Kirk's spacesuit to red for Rand's exit from the ship was the most problematic issue. I'm still not sure that the suit is the right colour - still looks orange to me but it will have to do...
My original plan was just to insert outtakes from the SLV into the DE with a small cameo for Rand in the second half of the movie but when I saw the rough footage of the Memory Wall, I wondered if I coukd do anything with the scene. Since Spock was off on his own, and V'Ger detects two carbon units, I needed someone else in Spock's spacesuit and something that would make V'ger detect them as opposed to Spock, who is passively observing and travelling mostly on momentum. It made sense that trying to set up a transporter relay to overcome V'Ger's jamming would be a sensible strategy, so as Transporter Chief, Rand stepped up.
The vibe I was going for from Alien has Rand babbling a bit because she is so terrified. It was a struggle to find relevant dialogue and to vocode the technobabble. I hope it sounds ok.
I was hoping that the new outtakes in the latest release would contain more rough footage of the attack on Kirk and I even had some dialogue ready, just in case. The scene ends with a placeholder so that the attack can be added if it ever becomes available. |
