How to move a switch on the wall. Before you begin relocating an outlet.
How to move an electrical outlet or electrical switches up the wall. If you want to move a electrical outlet or a light switch around from one side of a stud to the other side, you first need to know where the stud is before moving an outlet. Moving light switches should only be performed after you know where the wall stud is.
This is easy to tell, as the light switch electrical box is usually mounted sideways to the stud, so the stud is located either on the left or the right edge of the electrical outlet box for the light switch and a stud finder tool will help you see which is the case before moving a light switch.
First we need to determine if we can move an outlet in the first place.
Then you examine the wires inside the electrical outlet box for your light switch and see if the wires are coming from above or below the box. If the electrical wires are entering the light switch box from above, then you'll be able relocate and move a light switch up the wall because you'll need the slack of those electric wires.

How to move an electrical outlet up the wall uses the same tactics and how to move an electrical outlet down the wall, so this video is good for both cases of moving a light switch, or relocating an outlet.

But if the electrical wires are entering the electrical outlet switch box from below, you won't be able to move an outlet box up the all, because you need 6" of electrical wire to be able to wire in a new light switch or a new electrical outlet pair. You might be lucky and still be able to move the box a couple of inches if there is enough length of wiring sticking out of the electrical box.
Before you relocate light switch, cut the drywall
Then you slice into the drywall above the electrical outlet box so you can move the light switch up the wall up the wall. Moving a light switch is the same as moving an outlet, because moving electrical outlet boxes is the same thing as moving a light switch, it is the same box.
How to move a light switch up the wall
Now that the drywall is sliced open and you are ready to move an outlet, and the stud is exposed, you can undo the fasteners securing the electric outlet switch box to the stud, then you can begin relocating an outlet. If you are relocating a light switch, same thing move light switch now.
You just move the light switch up the wall, and secure it to the stud with either wood screws for wood studs, or self tapping metal screws for metal studs. That's all there is to moving an outlet/ light switch.
