Here is the text of this video:
We'e not having much luck these days finding new medicines for the treatment of cognitive impairment. Which is one reason that scientists are beginning to look at natural, herbal supplements to see if they're something there that might help.
And what I have here in this cup might be what they're looking for. It might even be what you're looking for.
This is tea made from the herb bacopa. It's been used to boost memory and brain function for several thousand years, and in modern times, it's emerging as a promising prospect for the treatment of mild cognitive impairment.
Hi, I'm Tony Dearing of GoCogno.com, the website for people with mild cognitive impairment.
If you are someone who watches these videos I do every week on brain health, you know this is unusual for me. I do not recommend vitamins or supplements. Most of what's out there lacks good evidence and it just being hyped by people who want your your money.
But I've been following research on the herb bacopa, and are getting really interested in it.
If you look at what's being written about it in serious scientific journals like the Annals of Neurosciences or authoritative websites like Dr. Axe or BeBrainFit, the range of benefits that bacopa offers to the human brain is kind of mind-boggling.
So what is bacopa? It's a flowering herb that grows in marshy areas pretty much around the world. It's an ancient remedy that goes back thousands of years in Chinese and Indian medicine, and has been used to treat everything from stress and depression to ADHD and epilepsy.
But can it work on people with cognitive decline or dementia? That's what scientists are studying right now and so far, the results look quite promising.
When you look at bacopa, what really stands out about it is how many boxes it checks in terms of things that we already know are important to slow cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia.
It's an anti-inflammatory.
It's an antioxidant.
It raises the level of BDNF (often referred to as "Miracl-Gro for the brain).
It improves blood flow to the brain.
It has cholinergic effects similar to Alzheimer's drugs like donepezil.
It grows brain cells and it increase neural connections.
That is like, a neurologist's wish list, and it certainly helps explain why so much research is being focused on it.
But here's what bacopa isn't. It isn't a secret formula or a magic cure. The research done on animals and humans so far is promising, but preliminary. And a lot more study needs to be done.
On the other hand, it's know to be very safe to take and it's inexpensive, and it's an option. Whether you try it is up to you, but please consult your physician before you make that decision.
If you want to know more, I've included links below to the articles and study I've mentioned. The article on BeBrainFit is particular good in explaining how to choose a supplement and how to take it, why it's important to get the organic version, dosage and possible side effects.
Now, as I said earlier, I don't recommend vitamins or supplements, but I know that a lot of people are trying a lot of different things, and I just hate to see them spending money on things I know are not doing them any good. So if you do want to try something, at least I want to show you one thing that might actually be significantly beneficial to you.
I hope you found this information helpful, and I hope to see you again next week. Until then, as always, be kind to your mind.
