After the Assyrian Empire fell, Babylon became the new powerhouse. King Nabopolassar and his son Nebuchadnezzar II led Babylon. This change in history marked the return of Babylon as the center of Mesopotamian culture and power, a rise that hadn't been seen since the time of the legendary king Hammurabi. Nebuchadnezzar was born in 642 BC. He was King Nabopolassar's oldest son. That he was named Nabu-kudurri-uṣur, which means "O Nabu, protect my first-born son" in Akkadian, speaks to his spiritual importance. Nabu was the god of learning and wisdom. He became important in the first millennium BC because he was the son of Marduk, the most important god in the Babylonian pantheon. Early on, the Prince of Babylon learned how to lead military campaigns. One of the most important was the campaign against the city of Harran in 609 BC. That's where Nebuchadnezzar helped his dad defeat the last of the Assyrian army. After this victory, he led troops with his father on a successful trip north of Assyria in the year 607 BC. After his father left for Babylon, he led his troops to several major victories by himself, quickly making Babylon the new superpower in the area. The most important event in his life happened at the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC. Nebuchadnezzar beat the Egyptian Pharaoh Necho II, which had effects that would be felt throughout history and are mentioned in the Bible in places like the Book of Jeremiah and the Book of Kings. #origin #bible #babylon |
