| Video Discription | John H. Summers, an amateur filmmaker, took these movies of his westbound trip on the Southern Pacific in 1941. It starts with a long sequence of shots as his train climbs up and over the then-new Huey Long bridge. There are additional shots as the train crosses the dry Southwest. It ends with another extended sequence of the unloading of an automobile (presumably his) from a box car. The original film is silent, so I've added some period-appropriate music from Glenn Miller. The lyrics aren't an exact match, since they talk about taking the Santa Fe, but it was the best I could do. If the music is not to your taste, by all means mute it. If anybody recognizes particular locations along the route, please leave a comment and I will add it to the description. |
