Here we have a simple circuit. It consists of a battery, wires, a bulb, and a switch.
When the switch is closed, there is a complete path for the electricity to flow, and the bulb lights up.
Now, let's add another bulb to the circuit like 'this'.
The bulbs are arranged in series, which means they are connected one after another, forming a single pathway for the electric current to flow through.
As we turn on the switch, observe closely.
You’ll notice that the bulbs are not as bright as when we had just one bulb in the circuit.
This happens because the two bulbs share the total voltage provided by the battery.
The current has to pass through both bulbs, and in the process, it is divided, leading to a reduction in the brightness.
Now, let’s add a third bulb to our series circuit.
We close the switch again. Look at that! The brightness decreases even further. As more and more bulbs are added in series to the circuit, each bulb receives a smaller portion of the total voltage, which leads to a reduction in brightness.
Quiz:
1. True or False: When a single bulb is connected to a battery, it shines with maximum brightness because it receives the full voltage from the battery.
Answer: True
2. What happens to the brightness of the bulbs when they are arranged in series and the switch is turned on?
Answer: The brightness of each bulb decreases because they share the total voltage provided by the battery.
3. If a series circuit consists of two bulbs and the switch is closed, how is the total voltage provided by the battery shared between the two bulbs?
Answer: The total voltage is divided equally between the two bulbs.
4. As more bulbs are added in series to a circuit, each bulb receives a __________ portion of the total voltage, which affects its brightness.
Answer: smaller
5. Imagine there are three bulbs in a series circuit; if one bulb burns out, what do you think will happen to the circuit when the switch is turned on?
Answer: The circuit will be incomplete, and none of the bulbs will light up.
6. What is the function of the switch in a circuit?
(A) To control the flow of electricity
(B) To increase the voltage supplied to the circuit
(C) To measure the current flowing through the circuit
(D) To provide electrical energy for the circuit
Answer: (A) To control the flow of electricity
7. If a series circuit with bulbs is functioning correctly and you add another bulb, what will likely happen to the overall brightness of all bulbs?
Answer: The overall brightness of all bulbs will decrease.
8. What do you think will occur when another battery is added in series to the circuit?
(A) The brightness of the bulbs will significantly increase
(B) The brightness of the bulbs will decrease
(C) The bulbs will not light up at all
(D) There will be no change in the brightness of the bulbs
Answer: (A) The brightness of the bulbs will significantly increase |
