"What is wrong with you?" "No...what's wrong with you, Joe. You're just so cold-hearted." "I have good reason to be so." "You know what I think? It's not the world you're angry with. No, you're angry at yourself; angry that you were once so altruistic that you gave up the ability to walk just to save someone you didn't even know." He just looked away. "You are partly correct. Do you really want to know why I act the way I do?" I nodded. "Because I can't...I can't protect you anymore. I used to carry you over the threshold and around the house. How do you expect me to do that now?" "I don't expect you to do that now...because it's not your job anymore. You helped me up back when I was weak. I have endured the harsh realities of life and come out stronger. Now...it's my turn to take care of you. Besides, I don't care that you can't walk. Even if you became quadriplegic, I wouldn't care. I didn't fall in love with your legs or your arms." I placed my hand on his chest. "I fell in love with this. With who you are, not with what you do or don't have." He was silent for a long while. "I know the real reason you brought me out here. You needed an excuse to take a hot bath with me." He smiled that great smile from so long ago. That's the kind of humor I loved about him. "Well then, did my plan work?" "Unless you want a frost-bitten lover, you'd better bring me inside." I placed a quick kiss on his lips and carried him back. After dinner and a bath, which he kept bugging me about, we laid together next to the fireplace. "I love you, Nick." "And I love you, Joe...the old you." I traced his figure with my finger, the way I used to when we were younger. "I guess winter isn't really the end of life, but the fresh start of having discarded our leaves of anguish for the promise of better petals in the spring." "Where'd you here that?" "I just made it up." He chuckled as he pulled me into an embrace that we both wish would last for eternity. THE END |
