The land of Egypt, which many refer to as the site of secrets, continues to tell many unexpected stories, despite being an international archaeological site for around 200 years – new discoveries are still being unearthed. And inevitably, this teases the question: what else lies undiscovered? In this video, we bring you 15 mind-blowing discoveries buried in the sands of time from ancient Egypt that shocked the whole scientists community and the world.
After some excavations at the cemetery of Philadelphia in Gerza, located 75 miles southwest of modern-day Cairo, you would not believe what they discovered! The excavations yielded significant archaeological finds after ten years of exploration. The discoveries include two well-preserved mummy portraits and additional fragmentary ones, a rare occurrence in over a century. The artifacts date back to Gerza's founding as Philadelphia during the Ptolemaic period, continuing through the Roman era. These portraits were believed to belong to wealthy individuals, as such a luxury was considered extravagant. The portraits were presumed to be painted by skilled artists from Alexandria. Initially established by King Ptolemy II for agricultural purposes, the site reflects a multicultural history inhabited by Greeks and Egyptians. The recent season revealed a semi-subterranean funerary house with decorated interiors containing mud-brick tombs and catacomb-style mass graves. Noteworthy findings include papyri inscribed with Demotic and Greek script, detailing regional social, economic, and religious conditions.
