| Video Discription | Transdiegetic Music or Sound in film is when the source of the music or sound changes from being diegetic to non-diegetic, or from non-diegetic to diegetic. As a reminder, diegetic music is music that appears in the diegesis or film world. The characters in the film world can hear, and sometimes see, the source of the music. Non-diegetic music is music that exists outside of the film world, and only the audience can hear it. Traditional orchestral underscore is an example of this. A short but fairly complex example of transdiegetic music can be found in the 1994 film Immortal Beloved, a fictionalised biopic based loosely on the life of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. In a scene that eventually depicts a performance of his famous 9th Symphony, we first hear the music as two characters have a discussion years later. At this point, it is non-diegetic. We then see a brief glimpse of the orchestra performing the music – so it is now diegetic - and then we flashback to the audience making their way to the concert, rendering the music non-diegetic again. Finally, we transition into the theatre to the actual performance, finally settling on the diegetic symphony. So – we have quickly transitoned from non-diegetic, to diegetic, to non-diegetic, and finally back to diegetic. We can therefore state that in this sequence, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony was transdiegetic. It transitoned seamlessly between diegetic and non-diegetic music. |
