| Video Discription | A group of northern residents say Saskatchewan’s forestry management plans are pro-industry and muskegs and forests inhabited by endangered species such as Woodland Caribou are being destroyed. For Peat’s Sake – Protecting Northern Saskatchewan’s Muskegs (FPS), is a grassroots organization of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, in the La Ronge area. They’re calling on the Saskatchewan government and industry to stop logging trees in muskegs and halt plans for peat moss harvesting. And says a 90-metre buffer zone around the Muskegs is needed to protect the habitat from logging and peat moss harvesting. The Forest Service Branch of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment and Sakâw, the corporate entity that holds the Forest Management Agreement for the Prince Albert Timber Supply Area, control the region's forest management practices. Sakâw manages an area spanning 3.3 million hectares. Peat’s Sake met with the members of the forestry industry and the province on January 29, 2024. A Peat's Sake spokesperson Miriam Korner says little was resolved. They want the province to include a hydrologist's assessment in their plans to preserve the water in the muskeg. The province's current five-year plan allows logging in and near muskegs. Peat's Sake says industry in the area is harming the habitat of Woodland Caribou, an endangered species highly sensitive to environmental disturbances. Forest managers with Saskatchewan Environment and Sakâw couldn’t be reached by deadline. Stay tuned for part two of the story when we talk to industry and the province. |
