This clip is from “An Objective Media: Fact or Fiction?”, a May 15, 2019 discussion hosted by the Media & Democracy program at the Brooklyn Historical Society, exploring America’s long-standing romanticizing of what the media is, how it functions, and race, gender, and power have always played an essential role defining the news we serve to the public. Panelists included Karen Hunter, SiriusXM host and former New York Daily News columnist; Kim Gallon, founder and director of the Black Press Research Collective and assistant professor of history at Purdue University; and Andie Tucher, director of Columbia Journalism School’s PhD program. The event was moderated by Kathryn Cramer Brownell, associate professor at Purdue University. This event served as the opening plenary for the Media & Democracy program's two-day research workshop on "Media, Technology, and Democracy in Historical Context."
