Florel by Monterey is a great growth inhibitor that prevents olive production on the tree. Its a great way to keep your olive tree from fruiting if purchasing a fruitless olive tree is not an option.
The Swan Hill Olive is touted as a true fruitless Olive...maybe only bearing tiny immature fruit every so often. Swan Hill Olive trees are very desirable as they have all the fantastic attributes of olive trees, but just without the fruit drop which can cause maintenance issues like stained concrete.
Now besides the Swan Hill, a great semi-fruitless option would be the Wilson Olive (Olea europaea 'Wilsonii'). These trees are more readily available and generally are a little less expensive. They come in beautiful multi trunk form as well as single trunk (standard) form. And although they are not a true fruitless olive tree, they dont produce nearly as much olives as a full fruiting variety, making the Wilson Olive a great choice for the landscape.
Here are a few key points why fruitless olive trees are super beneficial for the garden...
Low Maintenance: Fruitless olive trees do not produce olives, which means they do not require the same level of care and maintenance as fruit-bearing varieties. They do not need pruning for fruit production, and there's no need to worry about harvesting or dealing with fallen fruit.
Cleanliness: Since fruitless olive trees do not produce olives, they eliminate the mess associated with fallen fruit. This can be particularly advantageous in urban or residential landscapes where cleanliness is a priority.
Allergen Reduction: Olive pollen can be a source of allergens for some people. By planting fruitless olive trees, you can reduce the pollen production, potentially alleviating allergic reactions for sensitive individuals.
Aesthetic Appeal: Olive trees are renowned for their attractive evergreen foliage and Mediterranean charm. Fruitless varieties offer the same aesthetic benefits without the added complication of fruit production. They provide shade, texture, and visual interest to landscapes.
Versatility: Fruitless olive trees can thrive in a variety of soil types and climates, making them versatile choices for landscaping projects. They can be used as specimen trees, hedges, or planted in rows to create privacy screens or windbreaks.
Drought Tolerance: Olive trees, including fruitless varieties, are known for their ability to withstand drought conditions once established. This makes them suitable for xeriscaping and water-wise landscaping, particularly in regions prone to water scarcity.
Historical and Cultural Significance: Olive trees have deep historical and cultural significance in many regions, particularly in the Mediterranean. By incorporating fruitless olive trees into landscapes, you can evoke a sense of history and connection to traditional Mediterranean landscapes without the concern of fruit production.
Wildlife Habitat: While fruitless olive trees do not produce olives for human consumption, they still provide habitat and shelter for wildlife such as birds and insects. This can contribute to biodiversity in urban and suburban environments.
Overall, fruitless olive trees offer a range of benefits for landscaping projects, including low maintenance, cleanliness, aesthetic appeal, versatility, and environmental advantages. Whether used in residential gardens, public parks, or commercial developments, these trees can enhance the beauty and functionality of outdoor spaces.
