In this video you will see some overtaking of Roadtrains while towing a caravan. When done properly this can be done safely but there's a few things you should be aware of. You really should have a UHF radio in your vehicle set to channel 40. For example if you are behind a Roadtrain that is heading towards Perth from the North West, call the truck driver and say something like; "Yeh the South bound Roadtrain, we are behind you towing a caravan with Landcruiser and we would like to overtake if possible. Could you please let us know when it looks clear ahead" Its important to let the driver know what vehicle you are driving and what you are towing because that helps them judge how long it will take to get you around. The driver will usually respond and then you can work with him/her to complete the task. Some drivers will flash the right indicator a couple times to let you know when they think its ok to come around. When you decide to overtake call up again and let the driver know your coming with something like "Yeh im on my way" and then make your move. (You say "Yeh" when you start talking because sometimes there is a lag in the time you press the microphone to the time you start to transmit and the first word is often missed or cuts out) NEVER take the drivers word as gospel, only as a guide and always trust your own judgement first. Usually the truck driver will back off a bit when your passing to get you around quicker. Most trucks (in Western Australia) are speed limited to 100Kmh, the same as any towing vehicle so you may think its better to just sit behind rather than risk overtaking. This is ok but you need to allow plenty of room between you and the truck just in case other vehicles and trucks want to overtake. Remember these rigs can weigh well over 100 ton so in hilly areas you may be reduced to 40-60kmh or less as the driver negotiates the terrain. Also remember that debris from the road is often picked up by the trucks tyres and can damage your windscreen or your precious holiday rig. Some of the drivers I have spoken to prefer it if you pass them so they are not worried about you overtaking at an inopportune time. Badly timed/executed overtaking maneuvers can and has ended in deadly road accidents. You can always wait until an overtaking lane comes up but it still pays to let the driver know your on you way just in case.
As one driver put it "Have Patience, or be Patients"
Be safe people, i hope this information was helpful. |
