| Video Discription | The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decline in income for 84% of the households in India but at the same time, it also created 20 new billionaires who became rich during the pandemic. These are the findings of OXFAM's latest report entitled Inequality Kills which was released before the beginning of the World Economic Forum in Davos. The report says that the number of Indian billionaires grew from 102 to 142 and the collective wealth of India’s 100 richest people hit a record high of Rs 57.3 lakh crore. At the same time, 140 million people fell into poverty as jobs were lost during the pandemic. The Oxfam report also found that India’s healthcare budget saw a 10% drop from revised estimates of 2020-21. There was also a 6% cut in allocation for education, according to the report. Amidst all this, India now has the third-highest number of billionaires in the world after China and the United States. The pandemic was also a setback for gender parity as there were 13 million fewer women at work now than in 2019. India’s unemployment rate was also as high as 15 per cent in urban areas during 2020-21. The Oxfam "Inequality Kills" report, suggests imposing a wealth tax on the super-rich to curb India's growing inequalities. |
