You can check whether your body is in a sympathetic, fight or flight state, or a parasympathetic, rest and digest state. For 10 to 20 percent of people, this test will not work because of temporary or permanent nose or sinus problems including deviated septum, allergies, inflammation and other problems. PHYSIOLOGY Discovering your dominant nostril at any given time, will help you understand your body’s responses better. Right nostril dominance means that your nervous system is in fight or flight. While left nostril dominance means it’s in rest and digest. For example, if you’re hungry, you’ll almost always breathe through your right nostril, so fight or flight mode, because in the past humans needed to physically hunt or gather food. Then after a meal, you’ll want to switch to your left nostril, to rest and digest. So the blood will move away from your heart, lungs and muscles and focus on your digestive system. Ancient yoga practitioners intuitively understood that their nose was giving them insight into their nervous system. While in medical literature this concept has evolved and the alternating right/left nostril dominance is now referred to as the nasal cycle. Although the reasons why this left/right nostril dominance happens remains unknown, what is clear is that for most people the nasal cycle test will help you check whether the correct nostril is dominant when you need it to be and give a quick insight into the current state of your nervous system.
